It is a question that comes up more often than you might think, you have planned a psilocybin experience and then come down with a cold or flu. Is it safe to take shrooms when you are sick? The short answer is that it is generally not a good idea and here is why.
How Illness Affects the Psilocybin Experience
Your physical state going into a psilocybin experience has a significant impact on the quality and character of that experience. Being sick introduces several variables that can negatively affect the journey. Physical discomfort from illness symptoms, congestion, body aches, fatigue, fever, can become amplified during a psilocybin experience making it difficult to distinguish between illness symptoms and psychedelic effects. Nausea is already a common side effect of psilocybin and being sick can significantly worsen this.
The Immune System Consideration
Psilocybin affects serotonin receptors throughout the body including in the gut and immune system. While research on psilocybin's direct effects on immune function is limited some evidence suggests that psychedelics can modulate immune responses. When your immune system is already working hard to fight off an illness adding a powerful psychoactive substance is an additional burden that may not be in your body's best interest.
Medications and Interactions
If you are taking medications for your illness, antihistamines, decongestants, fever reducers, or antibiotics, you need to consider potential interactions with psilocybin. Some medications particularly those that affect serotonin levels can interact dangerously with psilocybin. Always research any medication you are taking before combining it with psychedelics and when in doubt consult a healthcare professional.
Set and Setting When Sick
The concept of set and setting is central to any psilocybin experience. Set refers to your mindset going in and setting refers to your environment. Being sick compromises both. Your mindset is likely to include discomfort, irritability, and lack of energy — not ideal conditions for a positive psychedelic experience. Your physical setting may also be compromised if you are stuck at home feeling unwell rather than in a comfortable intentional space.
When to Reschedule
The general recommendation from harm reduction practitioners is to reschedule your psilocybin experience if you are experiencing any acute illness symptoms including fever, significant nausea or digestive upset, severe congestion or respiratory symptoms, significant body aches or fatigue, or if you are taking any medications that may interact with psilocybin. Give your body time to fully recover before proceeding.
Psilocybin experiences are best approached when you are in optimal physical and mental health. Being sick compromises both and introduces unnecessary risk to what should be an intentional and well-prepared experience. Wait until you are fully recovered — the experience will be significantly better for it.
