Using concentrates for your cannabis edibles is an excellent way to achieve consistent potency while minimizing the strong "grassy" flavor often associated with raw flower.
Important Note: Not all concentrates require this step. If you are using RSO (Rick Simpson Oil), distillates, or any product already exposed to high temperatures (~220°F/110°C) for an extended time during extraction, they are already activated. If you are using shatter, wax, or live resin, follow the guide below.
Kitchen Tools Needed
-
Oven
-
External Oven Thermometer: Non-negotiable for ensuring your oven stays at exactly 220°F.
-
Silicone Mat or Parchment Paper
-
Oven-Safe Glass Dish
-
Aluminum Foil
Ingredients
-
1 gram of your chosen concentrate
Step-by-Step Activation Process
-
Preheat: Set your oven to 220°F (105°C). Use your thermometer to verify the temperature; exceeding this will "kill" the potency by denaturing the cannabinoids.
-
Prepare the Surface: Place your silicone mat or parchment paper inside the oven-safe dish.
-
Apply Concentrate: Spread the concentrate onto the mat.
-
Pro-Tip: Be mindful that as the material warms, it will thin out and expand. Keep it centered to prevent it from oozing off the edges of the mat.
-
-
Bake: Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and place it in the oven for 20 minutes.
-
The Cooling Phase: After 20 minutes, turn the oven off. Leave the dish inside the oven to cool down slowly. This gradual transition is essential to stabilize the cannabinoids.
-
Hardening: Once the dish is at room temperature, place it in the freezer for 10 minutes. This makes the material firm and significantly easier to scrape off the silicone mat without losing product.
Once removed from the mat, your concentrate is fully activated and ready for use in any of your favorite cannabis edibles recipes!
