When making cannabis tincture, whether THC or CBD, with alcohol it is best to go with the strongest alcohol you can get your hands on. Turning your cannabis flower into cannabis tincture is super easy and requires little effort and time if you are using a really strong alcohol. Some people argue that with 150+ proof the cannabis tincture can be ready in just a few minutes, however, for maximum potency it is best to allow it to sit for at least a few days. Store in a cool, dark place to maintain optimal potency. Some people like to burn the alcohol off in a crockpot however I use cannabis tinctures strictly for cooking, so the alcohol burns off, anyway. Be cautious if you choose to burn the alcohol off from the cannabis tincture as it is likely to cause a fire.

Important Safety Warning

This recipe uses high-proof alcohol, which is highly flammable.

  • Keep your tincture away from open flames, sparks, and heat sources at all times.

  • While some methods involve evaporating the alcohol in a crockpot, we advise caution; if you choose to do this, ensure the area is extremely well-ventilated and free from ignition sources. For most culinary applications, the alcohol evaporates naturally during the cooking process.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz (28g) Cannabis flower, ground and decarbed.

  • 750ml 190-proof (or higher) grain alcohol.

Kitchen Tools

  • 1-quart Mason jar with a tight-fitting lid

  • Fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth

  • Freezer-safe glass jar for storage

Step-by-Step Directions

  1. Combine: Place your decarboxylated cannabis into the 1-quart Mason jar and pour in the grain alcohol.

  2. Seal and Chill: Seal the jar tightly and place it in your freezer.

  3. Agitate: Shake the jar vigorously at least three times a day. For maximum potency, allow this process to continue for 3 to 7 days.

  4. Filter: Once the extraction period is complete, filter the contents through a fine-mesh strainer or double-folded cheesecloth to remove all plant material.

  5. Store: Transfer your finished cannabis tincture into a freezer-safe glass jar with a tight-fitting, airtight lid. Store in the freezer, ensuring it is kept safely away from children and heat sources.
