A downstem is the vital bridge between your bowl and your water chamber. It’s the tube that sits in your pipe’s joint, usually angled toward the base, and features slits or holes for filtration.
Because downstems come in a massive variety of shapes and sizes, picking the wrong one is a common mistake. Use this guide to ensure your replacement fits perfectly.
1. The Two Golden Rules of Measuring
Stoner Strategies follows industry standards for measurements. You need to know two things: Joint Size and Downstem Length.

Joint Size: Most pipes have a "female" joint. You’ll usually see three sizes:

10mm: Rare, typically for micro-rigs.

14.5mm (often labeled 14mm): The most common standard.

18.8mm (often labeled 19mm): The larger standard for bigger pieces.

Downstem Length: * If you have the old one: Measure from the top of the ground joint to the very bottom tip.

If it’s broken or missing: Insert a pencil into the joint until it’s just above the base of the pipe. Mark the pencil at the top of the joint, pull it out, and measure that length. Crucial: Always ensure your measurement doesn't hit the base of the pipe—you want a little clearance!

2. Choosing Your Style: Filtration vs. Flavor
Not all downstems are created equal. Your choice changes the hit:

Classic Slitted Downstems: These are the industry standard for a reason. They offer a "tried and true" diffusion method that balances flavor and filtration perfectly.

Firecut Downstems: These feature tiny, precise cuts. They are superior for preserving the pure flavor of your concentrates or herbs, but be warned: they can clog more easily than standard slits.
Pro-Tip: Avoid the "Cracker" Effect
If you're measuring your own downstem, "measure twice, buy once." If the downstem is too long, it will hit the base of your glass and crack your pipe or the stem itself. If it’s too short, your water won't cover the slits, and you won't get any diffusion at all!
