Is CBD Safe for My Pet?

Is CBD Safe for My Pet?

CBD for pets has exploded in popularity over the last few years and for good reason. Pet owners are increasingly turning to CBD as a natural option for supporting their animals' wellbeing — from anxiety and joint pain to inflammation and seizures. But is it actually safe? Here is what you need to know.

What Is CBD and How Is It Different from THC?

CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) are both cannabinoids found in cannabis but they work very differently in the body. THC is the psychoactive compound that produces the high associated with cannabis and as we covered in our article on pet cannabis toxicity, it can be harmful to animals in significant amounts.

CBD on the other hand is non-psychoactive. It does not produce a high and it interacts with the endocannabinoid system in a much gentler way. This is why CBD products formulated specifically for pets have become so widely available and accepted.

Does My Pet Have an Endocannabinoid System?

Yes. Dogs, cats, horses, and most other mammals have an endocannabinoid system just like humans do. This system plays a role in regulating mood, pain, inflammation, appetite, and sleep. CBD interacts with this system which is why it may offer supportive benefits for pets experiencing certain conditions.

What Are the Potential Benefits of CBD for Pets?

Research on CBD for pets is still in its early stages but current studies and widespread anecdotal evidence suggest CBD may help support reduction of anxiety and stress especially during thunderstorms, fireworks, or travel, relief from chronic pain and inflammation particularly in older animals with arthritis, management of seizure frequency in dogs with epilepsy, improved appetite and digestion, and better sleep and overall calm.

In fact the FDA has approved a CBD-based drug called Cytopoint for dogs with atopic dermatitis, signaling growing mainstream recognition of cannabinoids in veterinary medicine.

Is CBD Legal for Pets?

Hemp-derived CBD products containing less than 0.3% THC are federally legal in the United States. However the FDA has not yet officially approved CBD products for use in animals outside of specific medications. This means the market is largely unregulated so product quality varies significantly. Always choose products that are specifically formulated for pets, not human CBD products.

How to Choose a Safe CBD Product for Your Pet

Not all CBD products are created equal. When shopping for your pet look for products that are specifically labeled for pets and dosed by weight, made from organically grown hemp, third party lab tested with a certificate of analysis available, free from THC or containing only trace amounts well below 0.3%, and free from artificial additives, xylitol, or any ingredients toxic to animals.

Tinctures and oils are generally the easiest to dose accurately for pets. CBD treats are also popular but make sure you read the ingredient list carefully.

What About Cats?

Cats metabolize substances differently than dogs and are generally more sensitive to cannabinoids. While some cat owners report positive results with CBD the research for felines is even more limited than for dogs. If you have a cat always consult your vet before introducing CBD and start with an extremely low dose.

Potential Side Effects

CBD is generally well tolerated in pets but some animals may experience dry mouth, lowered blood pressure, mild drowsiness, or mild digestive upset especially when first starting. These effects are typically temporary and dose dependent. Starting low and increasing gradually is always the safest approach.

Always Talk to Your Vet First

Before introducing CBD into your pet's routine always consult your veterinarian. This is especially important if your pet is on any medications as CBD can interact with certain drugs by affecting how the liver metabolizes them. A good vet will work with you to find the right approach for your specific animal.

Final Thoughts

The short answer is yes — CBD can be safe for pets when it is the right product, the right dose, and introduced with veterinary guidance. As with anything you give your animal knowledge and caution are your best tools.

At Stoner Strategies we believe in informed, intentional use of cannabis and CBD products — for humans and their furry companions alike.
